R. August Hampe

I spent four years in the Navy, over 25 years coaching, and have an accounting degree. I have worked in construction, sports, auditing, marketing, and risk management; across non-profit, for-profit, oil and gas, benefit programs, facility management, and a few industries that defied easy categorization.

Doing all that work, I learned the common thread underneath it all: there is a pattern in every system, patterns behave in predictable ways under pressure, and a remarkable number of people will insist, often loudly, confidently, and incorrectly, that none of those things are true.

I didn't have to invent Simon Fade. I just had to change his name and give him superpowers I don't have. Yet.

I began writing when I got a simple idea: what would happen if a guy like me got dropped into a situation where someone had already determined the outcome, and the only way out was finding the pattern they missed?

My first novel, Fade Out, is a tech thriller currently in progress. The technology is plausible enough to be real, and real enough to be unsettling. The people inside it are trying to figure out who they are before the situation decides for them. You can read it as I write it, one chapter a month, unedited, on Substack. I'm genuinely excited to share it with you.

And there are more books coming. I have ideas I haven't written yet, including a modern take on a classic that I think will surprise people.

I live in Lancaster, SC with my wife and daughter. I write in the afternoons, evenings, and stolen weekends. I am not a fast writer. I am a stubborn and methodical one.

If you want to follow along, Substack is the place. That's where the work lives.
